Experience Mexican style Christmas holidays in Riviera Maya!

If you love spending Christmas with your family and visiting new places over the Christmas holiday season, Mexico is the ideal place for this year, especially the Riviera Maya.

Here, we explain to you what you need to know to celebrate a Mexican Christmas the way it should be and make it an unforgettable experience for you and your loved ones.

What are the Mexican traditions at Christmas?

Everything is painted Christmassy from the end of November in Mexico, and when we say everything, we mean EVERYTHING. Streets, offices, shops, bars, restaurants and even government offices are all decorated for Christmas, making it impossible to go unnoticed.

There are three typical events in Mexico at this time of the year:

– Las Posadas: Once the month of December begins, the tradition is that friends, colleagues and families get together for the popular celebrations, which were previously alluded to the journey made by Mary and Joseph as they looked for lodging with pilgrims before Jesus was born. Some people still re-enact the journey today, and other simply gather to have a good time, break open the piñata, drink ponche and eat tamales.

– Breaking open the piñatas: The piñata is hung up high, and the idea is to hit it with a wooden stick until it breaks, and the prizes fall to the ground. It’s so much fun! The person with the stick is blindfolded, and the others sing a traditional song that starts with the lyrics Dale, dale, dale, no pierdas el tino, porque si lo pierdes, pierdes el camino…  (Hit it, hit it, hit it, don’t lose your aim, because if you lose it, you’ll lose the way…).

– Dinner on Christmas Eve: Families and friends get together on the night of December 24 to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus and also to give thanks for blessings during the year. Typical dishes include romeritos, larded leg of pork, turkey, cod, prawns, tamales, fruit punch and fritters.
