Recommendations to eat well at a good price in Quito

Going for lunch or dinner at an affordable price in Ecuador’s capital has been somewhat complicated for some years now. A nice meal out usually cost more than $20 per person. But all is not lost, as there are a few quality options available at very reasonable prices.

We’re not talking about going to food courts, shopping centres, or other spots that sell food by portions. No, we’re talking about restaurants where you sit at a table in a cosy, welcoming place with friendly staff. Excellent gastronomic offerings for you to appreciate the work and devotion of a trained, qualified chef who creates quality products using the best possible raw materials.

The first option takes us to the heart of the historical centre of Quito,  La Purísima is in the interior of the old Bolivar Theatre, between the famous Pasaje Espejo and the Guayaquil. The restaurant boasts all the culinary background and experience of the chef Carlos Fuentes and has a menu full of top quality ingredients and new and surprising flavours from Fuentes’ research.

Apart from the outstanding river shrimp, La Purísima is known for its desserts, especially the butter cookies, rice pudding covered in chocolate and its ‘ostia’ sweets. For about $15 customers can enjoy a representative sample of the restaurant’s possibilities.

Then we have the delicious Italian restaurant Strada on Avenida República Salvador (N36-117). Italian restaurants are usually quite expensive in Quito but Strada has some excellent options for vegetarians, especially the delicious au gratin aubergines. The bruschetta with organic tomatoes, basil and olive oil also stands out from other more expensive spots. You can leave this place with a happy stomach for about $14 per person.

There are many more, and we’ll speak about them in other blog posts, but we finish this post, highlighting La Tribu Taína, between Av. Isabel la Católica and Coruña, which specialises in signature dishes. Spanish Serrano ham is imported and served with local products such as quinoa, organic eggs and fine flavour cocoa. Spicy aubergines are also popular and a great option to share. As you can see, quality food with sophisticated flavours is perfectly feasible in Quito for about $20 a head.
