Arehucas Rum, a day trip to complement the sun on Gran Canaria

No holiday plan would be complete without a list of things to do at your destination. Even if your plan is just to soak up the sun and relax, you’ll probably want to complement the plan with something a little different.

If you’re travelling to Gran Canaria in the next couple of months and staying at BlueBay Beach Club, we have a suggestion that comes highly recommended: a tour of the Arehucas Rum Distillery.  While there’s no shortage of things to do on Gran Canaria, this is one trip you can’t miss.

Only 45 minutes from the BlueBay Beach Club hotel by car, the distilleries are located in Arucas, Las Palmas, and welcome tour groups and visitors to buildings that date back to 1884.

With over 100 years of history, their rum is also known as the “el ron de las llaves” – literally, “the rum of the keys” – an allusion to the symbols of Saint Peter that appear on the label. Since the 1940s it has been regulated by the official “Ron Arehucas D.O.” certificate of geographical origin, and today is available in many different varieties, from their legendary classic rum, to honey, toffee or caramel rums. The distilleries are recognised to be the oldest rum cellars in Europe.

On the guided tour you can visit the distillery with its 4,300 American oak barrels, as well as learning about the company’s history from its earliest beginnings and – of course – tasting the wares. The tour costs only €2.50 for adults, with free entrance for children. One more reason to include it on your Gran Canaria to-do list!
