What are the Canary Islands Like in Winter?

The winter is a great time to visit the Canary Islands, the tourist crowds have gone and the islands revert to a calm state. The pace slows, the prices drop and most importantly, the sun still shines. Here’s our guide to getting some winter sun in the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Weather in Winter

If you’re looking to get some winter sun, then the weather will be the main thing you want to know. Generally, the weather in the Canary Islands in winter will be mild and generally sunny; although there is more chance of rain than during the summer months.

Although the islands may vary slightly in temperatures, in January, the coldest month, you can expect the daily maximum temperatures across all the main islands to be around 21C and the daily lows to be around 15C.

Winter in Lanzarote, for example, is when you would expect to get the most rain, but even then, it only averages 3 or 4 days per month. A winter holiday in the Canary Islands is still likely to give you good weather.

Things to do in Winter in the Canary Islands

Without the tourists, you can get closer to the real culture of the Canary Islands and how the locals live. The restaurants are less busy so you’ll get more attentive service. The shops are quieter so the prices will be lower. And if you do get a good beach day, you will have most of it to yourself.

Tenerife, Teide

There will be more than enough to keep yourself entertained, regardless of the length of your stay in the Canary Islands. Many of the national parks such as Teide on Tenerife, Timanfaya on Lanzarote and Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma will still be open and available to explore.

Likewise, although the boat trips may have stopped, if you like fishing then there will likely still be boat operators willing to take you out. You’ll also have the added bonus of having less people to share the boat with.

So there you have it, providing you’re happy to make some compromises, taking a holiday in the Canary Islands in winter can open up a whole new world, and let you see the islands in a new light.
