Family-friendly History and Culture in the Riviera Maya

Cancun is the epicenter of the Riviera Maya. Blessed with pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, here you’ll be in good company among sun worshipers from around the world.

BelleVue Beach Paradise and the main Cancun resort area is actually an island located just off the coast of Mexico, connected to the mainland via two short bridges. While there are several resorts in this popular area, don’t worry.  Even during the busiest months of February through April, you’ll find plenty of room to spread out and enjoy these world-class beaches.

If you’re keen to explore Cancun while on your beach vacation, you’re in luck! There is plenty to see and do within just minutes of the BelleVue Beach Paradise resort. Our day-long itinerary takes you to ancient Mayan ruins, boarding a ferry to a charming nearby island and catching Cirque du Soleil’s newest show all just minutes from the hotel.

Visit the Nearby El Rey Mayan Ruins

Mayan Ruins are the leftover archaeological sites of the extremely advanced Mayan civilization, which existed between 1300 BCE – 1200 CE. The Mayans were responsible for building large monuments to carry out numerous rituals and ceremonies and the ruins of these ceremonial monuments are what can be visited and explored today.

The El Rey Ruins are conveniently located close to the BelleVue Beach Paradise resort.

The ruins are best enjoyed in the morning hours before the temperature rises. There are often guides hanging out at the ruins, and if you’re keen to learn more of the history, be sure to enlist their services.

Explore Isla Mujeres by Golf Cart

Board a ferry to travel the short four miles from the mainland to Isla Mujeres. It’s easy to rent a golf cart and start exploring everything the island has to offer.

Head to the far Southern end of the island to check out an outdoors sculpture garden perched on dramatic cliffs that drop into the ocean’s rough waters.

Next, head up the Western side of the island. Consider stopping at the Sea Turtle Conservation station, where you can view a variety of sea turtle and other marine life and learn about them from the scientists in residence.

If you’re ready for a swim, head over to North Beach, the best beach on the island. Extremely shallow and calm, this beach is ideal for children. You’ll find a number of restaurants and street food vendors nearby if you’re hungry for lunch or a snack.

Cirque du Soleil’s Joya

Joya combines culinary and performing arts in an intimate theater setting. Drawing on Mexico’s history and heritage, Joya tells the story of an alchemist and his granddaughter embarking on a transformative quest to uncover the secrets of life.

The creators of the show actually traveled all over Mexico to capture different kinds of natural and cultural elements that show a different side of the country. Book a complete dinner and show experience or grab a drink at the bar and enjoy the show in the new theater.

Enjoy a day packed with history, exploration and culture all within just minutes of the BelleVue Beach Paradise resort!
