Roman Aqueduct of Los Milagros, Merida, Spain

We start bright and early, by popping out of the hotel and immediately visiting the imposing walls of the Alcazaba fortress – which was built by the Moors to guard the city’s Roman Bridge. Thousands of pedestrians still rely on this stunning bridge to cross the river each day and, as the longest surviving Roman Bridge in the world, it’s a truly spectacular site.

Of course, visiting the Roman Bridge is only scratching the surface of this city’s collection of amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site listed Roman wonders, so next, let’s wander across the city to the National Museum of Roman Art – which houses and protects the original statues, mosaics and intricately carved busts that were unearthed during the excavations.

Feeling a little peckish? Take a break to dig your teeth into slivers of intensely flavourful ham from Mérida’s black Iberian pigs, or to mix with the locals and share a couple of cervezas at a nearby bar, taking a refreshing break from the sun’s beaming glow.

Don’t get too comfy, though – we’ve still got plenty to see. Next, we take the short walk to the sublime Roman theatre and amphitheatre, which are the crowning jewels of this city’s treasure trove of Roman wonders, and are some of the best-preserved remains outside of Rome itself.

If you’re still not convinced by the genius of Roman construction and town planning, our next stop is sure to win you over. The city’s towering aqueduct, which carried water to the residents of the early settlement – called ‘Emerita Augusta’ – is still standing, and is a fitting testament to Roman ingenuity. Finally, choose whether you want to enjoy a classic theatre performance in a bewitching venue, or to taste traditional Spanish food with a quirky twist at one of the city’s best restaurants.

So relax, and let us be your guide, as we introduce you to historic Mérida, and help you to enjoy the perfect day here.
