Fotosub Cuba 2012



Since 1978, the first diving incursions took place to Punta Francés, south of Isla de la Juventud (“Isle of Youth”). In 1982, the 1st underwater photography Meeting takes place and the spot is declared International Diving Center.

The current edition of Fotosub left its usual seat to move to Cayo Largo del Sur, well known for its amazing sea depths, ideal for diving.

The Cuban tourist resort of Cayo Largo del Sur is the main stage for the activities of Fotosub 2012, held from 20 to 24 May. This renowned international underwater photography contest has an international jury of 5 experts, who unveiled the winners from among over 30 photographers from Italy, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, Chile, Canada and Cuba. This year’s grand winner was the Cuban Jose Cañibano, who dominated the categories: Environment and Environment with the Diver. Among the awarded were also the Italian Marco Gargiulo and Eduardo Menares from Chile. Chilean Fernando Olivares was the grand winner in the 2011 edition.

The idea of celebrating the event at that particular location this year is also related to the anticipation of the XIV World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS) Championship in 2013.

In Maria La Gorda (Pinar del Rio), from 11 to 17 June 2012, II International Meeting of Underwater Photography, IMASUB’12, which brings together underwater photographers of all countries interested in the beauty and qualities of Guanahacabibes National Park, with its impressive wide walls covered with large colonies of Black Coral, caves, caverns and tunnels.
