Toledo: The Love of D. Fernando and the beautiful Raquel

The Bitter Well

The Bitter Well. It’s been a long time that Leonora’s noble mansion has remained totally silent. After the rosary that the owner says after dinner, having turned down the lights and cleaned all the corners, the servants go back to their rooms to rest.

All is silent in this starlit and moonlit night. Suddenly, a shadow emerges from the portal and very quietly, making sure that the hinges do not squeal, closes the studded doors and, with his hat drawn, cloaked in his wide scarlet coat, with his hand on the hilt of the sword, he walks away, ensuring that no noise gives him away. It is the young Don Fernando, hurrying down what now is Nuncio Viejo Street, through dangerous crossroads to see Raquel, the beautiful Hebrew lady of his dreams.

Loud and stunning the ten chimes of the night sound all over Toledo. Don Fernando directs his steps down the street until he stops next to the walls of a lush garden surrounding the palace of the powerful Israeli called Levi. The night, with its myrtle and carnation-scented silence, warmly wraps the lyrical fragrance of youth. With silver knives, the moon carves in the Gothic mullioned windows, while shimmering in tremble to the murmur of the fountain in the garden pond.

Like for a scheduled appointment, in the window appears Raquel, the only child of the powerful Jew. When he sees her, Don Fernando bows down politely, and with amazing agility clings on to the ivy, comes over the wall and rushes to meet his beloved down in the garden. The moon, with its plastered face, smiles grotesquely as it hides among the shreds of tulle clouds, but not before ripping out glimmers of a dagger that draws a curve of death through the back and straight to the heart of Don Fernando. There is a muffled groan and a body falls lifeless on the sand of the garden, as the killer shadow is lost in the foliage. Raquel arrives, and a sinister cry breaks out of her chest as she sees the man bleeding on the ground. The moon has hidden behind the livid clouds and a thunder strikes, while the vindictive old man’s laughter resounds.

Every night, Raquel attends an imaginary appointment by the edge of the well in the garden. Her white silhouette stands out against the dark green of the orchards, while she rests her pale hands, folding them in her lap. She cries tears of pain into the well, the waters of which one day turn bitter. And one night, in the spell of the full moon, the unhappy Raquel, mistakenly thinking she saw her beloved in the waters, is drawn into the depths.
