Toledo: a legendary love, Abul & Sobeyha

Toledo’s tradition says that when the moon is clear and bright, there appears a shadow hovering over it and its surroundings. It is the spirit of Prince Abul-Walid comes out of his grave to see the silhouettes of the houses, gardens, balconies where every night he walked his beloved reflected in the moonlight.

The year was 1083 and Yahia reigned in Toledo Alkadir, grandson of Al Mamun. Alfonso VI surrounded the city, devastating the countryside forcing the hunger did surrender to the Muslims. Yahia appealed to the friendship between him and Alfonso with his grandfather Al-Mamun offering tributes, but none of it did soften the heart of Alfonso, who was anxious to regain the city had offered both welfare.

Yahia seeing that the city would be taken shortly and he could not do anything, try the Taifa of Badajoz and Zaragoza will help but these efforts bore fruit as the King of Zaragoza died before carrying out their project aid and Badajoz died after being defeated by the troops of Alfonso VI. His only solution was to send messengers across the Strait, north of Africa. African kings heard the request and before sending aid decided to send a messenger to assess the situation and actual needs, and will be easier when you know how much help mandar. The choice fell on the young warrior Abul-Walid. When the young prince came to Toledo, this was treated as a hero, because it really would be his only salvation. That is why since I did not stop Abul pay in his honor feasts, tournaments and high praise, but what really drew the attention of the young were not parties in his honor if not the beautiful young sister that day after Yahia day both were fixing their eyes more minutes in the other. So that way the two young men became known and slowly fall in love, every day went out in the beautiful city of Toledo touring its landscapes, gardens, smelling the flowers, the beautiful Sobeyha taught every corner of Toledo each one more beautiful, and nicer still to have Sobeyha next.

The two young men fell in love, but love Abul but had not forgotten what brought him there, would have to return to Africa to report what was happening in Toledo, until one day he decided he could not postpone it further.

He arrived the night before departure. The two young men exchanged vows, she swore that she would wait until he came and swore he would return and this time not to go anymore.

In his absence, Alfonso VI took over the city and Yahia had to leave the city without his sister sick with love for the absence and died of grief. But before his death, left a lasting legacy to a slave, telling Abul, who had died thinking he will not take the city and return to Africa.

Abul-Walid came from Africa with his army, eager to take the city and be with his beloved. Arriving near Toledo the bad news came to him, the city had been taken by the Christians and the worst news Sobeyha slave transcribing the words he had uttered his beloved before he died.

Abul stayed very sad disobeyed his beloved and camped on the outskirts of Toledo, intending to retrieve it. His armies occupied the outskirts of the city, across the river, next to the now called cigarrales and Infantry Academy.

With his generals studied the strategy for days. At night, from the highest rock was the likeness of Abul, looking every street in Toledo where he had walked with his beloved. Fear of Abul entry, caught between the people, his reputation preceded him.

El Cid, who was in Toledo, devised a plan: “One night in the dark and without anyone expecting, was ahead of the enemy’s intentions and left the walls of the city with a large army, very quietly attacked the camp no one expected it, the shadows were their allies. ”

The next morning, Abul found dead, an arrow pierced her heart. The Arabs have surrendered to the Cid, who left them to return to Africa. Abul buried in those clubs for their desire to remain forever in that place, watching the city where he lived his great love.

Where the story ends is where the legend, locals say that in the moon, looking from Toledo, is still the king’s body on a rock watching Abul where walking with Sobeyha.
